Established in 1997, the Methodist School Of Music (MSM) is a Christian music school set up by the Methodist Church
in Singapore to enhance the music and worship ministry in the churches by providing training and resources.

The School offers a range of courses designed to meet the needs of the general public as well as that of churches.
Individual instruction is available in singing and various instruments based on structured syllabi of the Associated Board
of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Trinity College of London (TCL) and others; individual and group classes are
available for church music (traditional and contemporary).

Church Music Encounter2008

The Enduring Practice of Singing the Psalms
By Dr. Emily Brink

There are three main ways to sing the psalms, namely, chant, metrical psalmody and responsorial psalmody. Using examples for singing, this lecture will examine each of these types as to their strengths and challenges for the 21st century.

Emily Brink is Senior Research Fellow of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Editor Emeritus of Reformed Worship , a quarterly journal published by Christian Reformed Church Publications. Her areas of responsibility include conference planning and global resources. She also teaches courses in music for worship at Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary. She is active in the American Guild of Organists, having served in both local and national offices, as well as in the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada,serving as president from 1990-1992; in 2004 she was named a Fellow of the Hymn Society in recognition of distinguised service to hymnody and hymnology.

Her areas of interest include congregational song from all times and places; psalmody; hymnal editing (she was editor of 3 hymnals); consulting with a wide range of churches on worship renewal issues. Dr Brink has a graduate degree in organ and church music from the University of Michigan and the Ph.D. in music theory from the Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

Choir
Festival

A Children's Choir Festival featuring the choirs from Paya Lebar Chinese Methodist Church, Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church, Methodist School of Music and Glory Presbyterian Church. The children will present anthems, read scriptures, and lead in congregational singing on the theme of creation and care for the environment. Come and worship together with the children!

A compilation of Asian compositions of ten choral anthems with varied styles and levels of difficulty for mixed, treble choirs and the congregation.

Seven composers from
Singapore - Lim Swee Hong, Mary Tan
and So Heng; Indonesia/Singapore - Jusuf Kam; Malaysia - Lu Chen Tiong; Philippines - Joy T. Nilo; and Taiwan - Chan Hung Da took up the challenge to set an Asian flavor to the following Wesleyan texts.

MSM Choir

Opportunities to perform at major MSM/Methodist events, attend workshops with visiting clinicians, premier new compositions by Asian composers. Includes choral reading sessions and vocal training. The choir practises every Tuesday, 8-9.30 pm, at MSM. For inquiries, please contact Judith at 67675258.

Come! Join the MSM Ringers

The MSM Ringers is a 3-octave handbell ensemble that performs regularly during special services and functions. Repertoire includes ringing with choir and other instruments. Anyone who has a good sense of rhythm and is able to commit to weekly rehearsals is welcome to join the ensemble. We practise every Tuesday from 6.45 pm - 8.00 pm. MSM Children's Choir

The children will learn repertoire, rhythms and how to play ensemble instruments such as the angklung and handbells. The Seraphim Choir (age 4-6) practises from 3-4 pm on Saturday. The MSM Choristers (age 7-15) practises from 4-5.30 pm on the same day. For inquiries and registration, please call Judith at 67675258.
